April 2009

As we near the end of the 2008-2009 school year, Net Impact is preparing for our final event, I3 @ Darden: Imagine, Ideas, Impact ("i-cubed"). This event will give Darden students an opportunity to learn more about how our community views sustainability and how each member can get involved.

Net Impact at Darden is proud to be a co-sponsor of the 2009 BBSF Conference - The Business of Social Change: Using Business Principles to Solve the World's Biggest Challenges. Registration for Darden Students is FREE. Find out more about the conference and sign up here.

During the weekend of February 14th, the Darden Team of Baijnath Ramraika, David Bowlin, Chip Ransler, and Ravi Yekula won first place in the regional round of Wal-Mart's Better Living Business Plan Challenge. The competition focuses on sustainable business ideas that foster innovation around the world. The team's winning business plan is for Clean India, a business which provides industrial wastewater recycling and water supply services in a profitable, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly manner. The Darden Team will advance to the national finals in Bentonville, Arkansas in April.

2008 - 2009 Highlights

Darden Students attend the National Conference

Thanks to the generosity of Gulf Petrochemical Industries Co. and Sherwood Frey, 15 Net Impact members attended the National Net Impact Conference held November 13-15, 2008 at The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. The conference is held annually in the United States at a prominent business school and provides Net Impact members with opportunities to interact with graduate and undergraduate students, business professionals, and academicians from around the globe; to learn more about relevant business issues such as the role of sustainability and renewable energy; and to research and interview for internships and full-time positions.

Darden Students Pilot Carbon Offsetting

The first Darden Carbon Footprint (DCF) Challenge was a great success! For a week the members of the Darden Community worked to reduce its waste through increased usage of reusable coffee mugs and water bottles, change behavior for the benefit of the planet, and support Darden's carbon neutral goal by purchasing offsets.
